Terrible experience, would advise to avoid.
- spoken to rudely throughout and no hospitality provided at all. the service, standard and experience provided just does not match at all the price being paid for the experience and it is certainly far from a '5 star luxury tour' as marketed by the operator.
- operator did not follow the advertised itinerary at all, did whatever they wanted which caused us and others many issues. moreover, did not communicate any such changes to us until just a few hours before the events and that too only after we followed up for updates. other operators were providing customers with updates about the program and we had to find out through our friends what we would do next. in many instances only communicated to us just 20-30 mins before we had to leave.
- as a result, the operator forced us to change our hot air balloon ride which they changed time for last second. refused to give us a full refund. we know from friends that others queued up there for several hours and still were turned away due to availability issues despite prebooking.
- very rushed, like a boxticking exercise. not given sufficient time at the sites despite paying significant entry fees. more like a photo tour where we went around and were just given time to take a few photos then herded back to the boat. if you have any genuine interest in exploring the sites, I would avoid this cruise (we were especially upset about Edfu temple). all cruises also arrive at the same time so very very crowded.
-poor tour guides, hard to believe these are 'qualified egyptologists' as advertised. many times our guide did not tell us any relevant information about the site which we only figured out through eavesdropping on other groups' guides who were providing excellent info. in one instance our guide finished our tour quickly so he could go take another tour in the same time slot to double his earning. in other instances, we had to Google our own self-guuded tours to understand the various historical sites because the guide provided us no info or incorrect info.
- we were made to feel obliged to tip even when no additional service was provided and/or we had received an extremely poor service. would suggest thinking of the price of the tour as including significant unnecessary tipping and consider if it is worth it (we didnt). for example, we were pressured on more than one instance to tip the driver who just drove us a short distance which should be covered in the total price already. the horse carriage which is marketed as included in the tour will actually force you to tip the driver anyway, as if you were paying for it separately.
- aside from tips, there are a number of other money making gimmicks which make this tour price just a base price. they do not provide any water on the boat which is a basic necessity that even a simple hotel will provide. they charge water at 5x the price knowing that customers on board will have no choice but to pay that. No WiFi, charged at 10 USD for 1 GB of data.
- food on the boat is pretty sub par and bland although many of the kitchen staff are very sweet. they made our stay slightly better.
- we were advertised, booked and paid for a private tour but we're put into group tours where the group was sometimes 20 or so people. could not understand or hear anything, very chaotic, no personalised attention etc.
overall, if I could go back in time and reverse this decision I would, would not recommend it to anybody and I will be contacting viatour to arrange a full refund. I spoke to anumber of other participants on board who echoed the exact same experience and will be contacting their agents for the same.
